Basic Education:

Basic Education: Throughout the 2007/2008 school year, SDO continued its basic education program for children and adolescents in 6 districts of Kabul (Shakardara, Guldara, Istalif, Farza, Kalakan, and Chaharasiab), and in Deh Yak district of Ghazni province. 2007 was the final year of this six-year program in Kabul, and these centers were officially handed over to Government schools in these districts. However, the Ghazni project continued to be run by SDO. The following are the major services provided by SDO through this project during the year of 2005/06:

o 62 basic education centers, catering for 1850, predominantly female, students were studying graduated from 6th class and officially handed over to education department of respective districts. Based on the agreement SDO was obliged to hand over the education centers to the government in those areas where the government established school after they completed grade six.
o 36 basic education centers (Grades 2,3 & 4) were established in Ghazni province, with a total of 1250 students (mostly girls)

To improve the quality of teaching and to upgrade the capacity of the teachers, SDO conducted the following workshops for teachers:
o Teaching methodology for mathematics - for grades five and six
o Homework workshops were conducted, emphasizing its importance in the learning process, and the characteristics and types of homework conducted.
o Workshops on communication and its role in learning, characteristics of a good learner, principles and skills of communication and its relation to good learning were conducted.
o Workshops on the stages of students' development were conducted.

Adult Vital Literacy Program: Throughout 2007/2008, SDO implemented adult vital literacy projects in Shakardara, Kalakan, Qarabagh, Dehsabz, Paghman, Farza and Guldara districts of Kabul province. SDO established 39 adult literacy classes where 975 adults (mostly women) completed courses in vital literacy. Similarly another adult literacy project was implemented in Chaghcharan, Dawlat Yar and Lal Sarjungle districts. 40 adult literacy classes were formed where 900 women completed literacy courses.

SDO uses Afghanistan’s national literacy curriculum in all its centers. SDO supplemented literacy lessons in these centers with peace education, for the purpose of raising students' awareness of peace and peaceful co-existence. The peace education curriculum for grades 1-12 was developed by SDO and Cooperation for Peace and Unity.

Health education for women supplemented the main curriculum, help learners to gain an more informed understanding of personal and environmental hygiene, child-care and the treatment of simple diseases. More than 90% of the students were able to read and write basic text, as well as basic mathematics. 16% of the students were able to join different classes in school based on their competence. However, 21 cases of dropouts were registered in both projects.
