Carpet Rural Enterprise:
In the past, Afghan carpets had a special place in international markets. However, this industry has been given little attention in past few decades. Handmade products such as carpet are unique. However, these carpets are sometimes lacking quality, including inconsistencies in dying, weaving and shape. The root causes of these drawbacks in quality are closely related to wool and lack of knowledge of carpet weavers and business people on quality aspects. Like our saffron rural enterprises, carpet rural enterprise aimed to create jobs and promote the carpet industry in Daulatabad district of Balkh province. This project was funded by MRRD/NABDP/UNDP.
SDO was able to facilitate the creation of Itefaq Carpet Production Rural Enterprise in Daulatabad district.
SDO trained the shareholders of this rural enterprise on wool dying, high standard weaving, finishing (cut & wash) and marketing based on international standards. The training focused on quality assurance aspects in all the processes of carpet production. Part of the training focused on the introduction of innovative designs and colors based on the demand of the global markets.
MRRD/NABDP/UNDP provided the enterprise with a block grant to fund the construction and installation of equipment, forming 50% of the total investment in this enterprise. The shareholders of this enterprise contributed the remaining 50% of the investment.
