Conflict Background:


1. How did this conflict begin and what were the reasons?

Siddiq and Karim bought a piece of land together. However, when the deed was written, Siddiq’s was registered as the sole owner of the property. Karim argued that he was also the owner, and his name should be mentioned in the deed as the owner of the land. 

2. Where did the conflict begin?

A village in Balkh Province

3. When did the conflict begin and how long did it last?

Since 2007

4. Who were conflicting parties?

Siddiq and Karim (cousins)

5. Who else were involved in the conflict?
A: How were they involved in the conflict?

Effects of Conflict:


1. What physical harm did the conflicting parties suffer?

The conflict had a very negative impact on the mind and life of both men.

2. What financial losses did the conflict cause?

They spent a lot of money over three years in an attempt to solve the problem, but they did not succeed.

3. What negative impacts did the conflict have in the community?

If the conflict hadn’t been resolved, it would have become violent and could have involved their relatives too.

4. Are there other people who have been badly affected by the conflict?

C: Did this effect force them to enter the conflict?

Section Two:
Conflict Resolution Process:

1. What is the name of the Peace Shura involved in the conflict resolution process?

2. Who were the Shura members involved in the conflict resolution process?

Fawad and Samir along with some other influential people.

3. How were they informed about the conflict?

Conflicting parties referred the conflict to Samir, a community elder and Shura member.

4. What important points were taken into account in the resolution process?

Several meetings had been held with each side and the ground for negotiation had been facilitated.

5. Who did the Shura members contact for conflict resolution?

The Mullah (religious leader), influential people and villagers.

6. Were other people involved in the conflict resolution process?

Yes, Muqeem, from the NSP and an interim Peace Shura member, was also involved.

7. Explain the peace process.

Shura resolved the conflict using negotiation skills they had gained from SDO’s Peace Building workshops.  

8. Where did the Shura members learn the required skills for resolving conflicts?

Shura members had learned some skills of conflict resolution from their ancestors; however, Peace Building workshops helped them learn conflict analysis tools and deal with conflicts professionally. 

Problems Encountered during Peace Process:

1. What was the problem?

Siddiq was not willing to attend the meetings.

2. What was its effect in weakening the conflict resolution process?

Meetings delayed several times due to his absence and this wasted time.

3. What was the result of conflict resolution efforts?

Conflict was resolved and in the deed names of both were put. They are now co-owners of the land.

1. How do you evaluate efforts of Peace Shura?

They are capable of dealing with conflicts and can resolve them peacefully.

2. What suggestions do you give for further improvement?

Refresher workshops should be held to enhance their capacity.  Their achievements should be recorded in magazines.
